Early Life and Musical Foundation

Chris Pinset was born on August 22, 1977, in Brooklyn, New York, to Alain and Marie Pinset. His father was an international chef who operated restaurants in multiple countries. His mother was born in Martinique and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. Raised in a multilingual household, Pinset spoke French and Creole before English.

He spent much of his childhood in Jamaica, Queens during the 1980s, when hip-hop was evolving from a New York movement into a worldwide cultural force. The borough’s musical environment exposed him to a wide range of sounds, from pioneering hip-hop acts such as Run-DMC and Salt-N-Pepa to the funk, soul, jazz and rock records that helped shape early hip-hop production.

Pinset began playing guitar at four. His grandmother, Rachel Ouka, later purchased a Casio SK-1 keyboard at a garage sale, giving him another way to experiment with sound. By approximately age ten, he was spending time in a neighbor’s studio and becoming familiar with equipment including the Akai MPC-60 and Korg M1.

His early exposure to professional musicians and recording environments gradually turned a childhood interest into a lifelong vocation. One of his formative memories was attending a vocal recording session associated with the New Jack City soundtrack and the R&B group LeVert. Pinset moved to Rockland County in 1992 while remaining connected to New York’s wider music community.

Entering the New York Studio Community

By the mid-1990s, Pinset was professionally recording performers across several genres. When he was not working with music, he was developing his visual instincts by filming skateboarding videos on the streets of Manhattan. His childhood friends CX and drummer-producer Adam Deitch began calling him “Max,” a nickname inspired by Cinemax and his frequent use of a video camera.

Those relationships helped connect Pinset with performers associated with Bad Boy Entertainment, including Black Rob and G. Dep. Through New York’s interconnected studio scene, he participated in sessions involving Cam’ron, Jim Jones, JAY-Z and Beanie Sigel.

His professional development also included experience in environments associated with Def Jam Recordings, Universal Music Group and Quad Recording Studios. These experiences allowed him to observe the full process behind major releases, from the earliest recording sessions through editing, mixing and delivery.

Production Work With KRS-One

Pinset became part of the production team behind KRS-One’s Adventures in Emceein. Released in 2008, the album brought together contributors from several generations of hip-hop and included appearances by Chuck D, MC Lyte, Nas, Rakim and Just Blaze.

The published production credits list Chris “Max” Pinset alongside KRS-One, Adam Deitch, Adam Smirnoff, Duane “DaRock” Ramos, Stevie J and other contributors. The album remains one of the clearest publicly documented milestones from Pinset’s early production career.

Creative Work With Redman

Pinset’s work with Redman became another defining chapter of his career. During the development of Red Gone Wild: Thee Album, Pinset contributed production and engineering within a team that included Adam Deitch, Erick Sermon, Pete Rock, Rockwilder, Timbaland, Scott Storch and DJ Clark Kent.

Pinset and Deitch are credited as producers on “Bak Inda Buildin,” “Sumtn 4 Urrbody” and “Suicide.” The album also featured appearances by Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Method Man, Erick Sermon, Saukrates and Ready Roc.

Redman served as a mentor to Pinset, helping him continue developing as a producer and mix engineer. Their creative relationship continued years later with “80 Barz,” a 2021 Redman release produced by Chris Pinset. The song introduced Pinset’s production to another generation of listeners while extending a professional relationship rooted in New York studio culture.

Mood Recording and Esclave

Pinset helped establish Mood Recording in Rockland County as a professional environment for recording, production, mixing, mastering and audiovisual work. The studio combines traditional recording practices with modern digital technology, enabling projects across hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, live instrumentation and music for film and television.

Mood Recording became a creative home for performers from the surrounding community as well as visiting artists. Early sessions involved singer Meleni Smith and Jermaine Paul, a vocalist known for his work with Alicia Keys and for winning the second season of The Voice.

The studio was also used during the development of Divinity Roxx’s album ImPossible. Published album information credits Pinset among its producers, while the project received two Independent Music Award nominations.

Pinset subsequently developed the independent Esclave label as another outlet for music and multimedia projects. Mood Recording and its extended creative network have hosted or supported sessions involving artists such as Busta Rhymes, Smoke DZA, 38 Spesh, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher, Jay Worthy, Uncle Murda, Foxy Brown, Cory Gunz, Fred the Godson, Rome Streetz, Planet Asia, Saukrates and Keith Murray.

The studio’s broader history also encompasses projects connected to Anhayla, Ellis Dodi, Oran Juice Jones II, Ariel Yvonne, ADG, Shahef, Chase Fetti, Elcamino, RJ Payne, The Musalini, Rain 910, Ty Farris, Eto, Flee Lord, Grafh, Rasheed Chappell, Street Justice, Jamal Gasol, G4 Jag, Reef Hustle, Flashius Clayton, Daniel Son and Black Geez.

Studio participation can include recording, engineering, production, rehearsal, content creation or other technical services. It does not necessarily mean Pinset served as the primary producer on every artist’s commercially released work.

Film and Visual Production

Pinset’s creative work has never been limited to sound. His interest in cameras began with skateboarding videos and eventually developed into work across music videos, independent films and larger productions. His experience includes directing, camera work, grip work, soundtrack production and content acquisition.

In 2009, Pinset worked in the grip department on The Greatest, directed by Shana Feste. His credits also include camera and grip work connected to Harvest, directed by Marc Meyers.

In 2016, Pinset contributed guitar to music created for the final scene of Dog Eat Dog, the crime thriller directed by Paul Schrader. The film’s score involved Dark Angels collaborators Nicci Kasper and Deantoni Parks, with related studio work completed at Mood Recording.

Pinset moved into directing with the 2019 independent film I’m Afraid It’s Arline. His IMDb profile also connects him with projects including Black Trump and Isramerical.
